## Research and Development

Research and Development represents a true **human and technological asset** for Chiesi and, together with innovation, the driver of the company’s growth.

The company has been investing a significant portion of its turnover in Research & Development for many years. As a result of these investments, in 2025 the Group was ranked as the **top pharmaceutical company in Italy for R&D investments** and **eleventh in Europe**.

In 2025, Chiesi filed 36 patent applications with the European Patent Office (EPO), reinforcing its position as the **top Italian pharmaceutical company** and **seventh-ranked Italian companies** across all sectors in terms of patents filings, with a total of **6,324 patents** worldwide.

Most of Chiesi’s medicinal products are the result of internal research, but the pipeline also includes products developed through collaborations and partnerships with other pharmaceutical companies.

The R&D team is primarily based at the Paolo Chiesi Research Center in **Parma** (Italy) and integrates with six other major research centers in **Paris** (France), **Chippenham** (UK), **Cary** (USA), **Lidingo** (Sweden), **Shanghai** (China), and **Toronto** (Canada).

The number of **Research and Development programs** continues to increase and diversify, enriching the therapeutic offering. It focuses on several key areas: chronic respiratory diseases, rare and ultra‑rare diseases, neonatology, and special care.

We concentrate both on **development** (clinical research aimed at registering new medicines) and on **applied research** (identifying new chemical or biological entities, or different therapeutic solutions).

Chiesi is expanding its product portfolio with various types of medicines alongside traditional small molecules, such as **biological products (proteins)** and **advanced therapies (cell therapies)**, while consistently embracing an innovative approach to these emerging therapeutic areas.
